On-Campus Facilities

Analytical Facility

Analytical facilities in the GPS division are available to the campus on a fee basis. Both instrument time and operator services are available. Analytical services are provided to other colleges and universities, and under certain conditions, off campus analytical work is accepted from corporations, government labs, non-profit organizations, and individuals.

Caltech Central Cluster

A High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster, it is a coordinated group of server computers running CentOS Linux 7.

Center for Microanalysis

The newly established Center for Microanalysis at Caltech houses two Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) instruments, also known as ion microprobes. The Cameca IMS 7f-GEO is a magnetic sector SIMS instrument based on the Cameca IMS 7f, but modified for geoscience applications. The Cameca NanoSIMS 50L is a type of ion microprobe designed for elemental and isotopic analysis of ultra-fine features (with spatial resolutions down to ~50 nm). It also offers extremely high sensitivity at high mass resolution and the capability of simultaneously measuring up to seven masses from the same small volume. The combination of these two state-of-the-art ion microprobes in one laboratory provide powerful diverse capabilities in trace and isotope analysis, depth profiling, ion imaging and geochronology, with low detection limits, high spatial resolution, and/or high precisions.

Environmental Analysis Center

The Environmental Analysis Center (EAC) is an open-access, user-operated laboratory at Caltech. The EAC is based in the Environmental Science and Engineering program, but is open to all Caltech researchers. Analytical methods available include Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography, Ion Chromatography, Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, and Capillary Electrophoresis.

CCE Instrumentation Shop

The CCE Instrument Shop in room 014 Church offers students design assistance for their optical or mechanical device designs while providing full machining services for ferrous & non-ferrous metals, stainless steels, refractory metals, plastics and machinable ceramics.

GIS Laboratory

The Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratory provides remote sensing, 3D modeling and other geographic information system resources for researchers within the division.

TheĀ  Bruce Murray Laboratory for Planetary Visualization

The Bruce Murray Laboratory for Planetary Visualization is a new facility within the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. The goal of the lab is to develop and implement state-of-the-art image processing, visualization and data integration techniques. The Murray Lab is actively engaged in terrestrial data visualization projects, including production and rendering of ultra-high-resolution gravity models, topographic models, and cm-scale drone imaging and topographic modeling of field sites.
