Ge 108: How to get MATLAB working
MATLAB will be used for many of the homework problems. Caltech has a
site-wide
license that allows you to use MATLAB on any unix, windows, or mac
machine that
is hooked up to the campus internet.
- If you will be working on the GPS unix cluster, you don't need to
do
anything.
Just type "matlab" and MATLAB will start.
Otherwise, while you're on the Caltech or GPS network, log onto the Caltech
Software Site
You will be asked for your ITS (aka IMSS) username & password. You
were given a username to the
campus wide computer system at orientation. This is the username to
enter here, not one from a local GPS network.
This will pull up a page "Welcome Page". Click on the "Software" link
at the top of the page to access the various software packages you can
download for free from Caltech.
Note all of the cool stuff available!
Click on the Matlab R2006a link and this will pull up a page with a
range of Matlab versions that you can download for your type of
computer. We've test Matlab R2006a (not b!) for Mac and Windows
and those work.
Once you've clicked on your preferred version, click the "Add to
Shopping Cart". Once you do this, you are taken to a page that appears
to be a dead end, but click on the "View Order Detail" which will bring
you to the page that actually has the "Install Now" button. Keep this
web page available. You still need it.
Installation consists mostly of clicking the obvious
button, but you will need to cut-and-paste the very long PLP # from the
web page to the location where it asks for it. And then you will have
to track down the license file by reading the installation
instructions. iAnd also the locations of CD2 & CD3. But as long as
you do all of that everything seems to work just fine!
Read your instructions carefully.
If you have problems with the installation, you can get hard copies of
the CDs from the Help Desk located in the Center for Student Services
building, room 312.
