Ge 211: Applied Geophysics II, Winter 2011 classCourse Description -This course is being offered now, Winter 2011. The class involves either 1 or 2 weeks of field work in southeastern California in late February and early March, as part of the Salton Seismic Imaging Project. The students will help to deploy and retrieve seismometers as part of the data collection effort. Lectures on these techniques and instruction on data collection and initial data processing will be given at scheduled class meetings. Each student is expected to read background material prior to the field work. There will be 3 homework assignments. Each student is also expected to write up a short report on some aspect of the data collected. The field work dates are Feb. 25 to March 5, or March 5 to March 12, or both. . If you are participating in both weeks, or just the first week, you will leave campus on the evening of Friday, Feb. 25 (in order to stay in El Centro that night and participate in a training session all day on Saturday, Feb.26th). If you are participating in the 2nd week, you will need to be at the training session in El Centro on Sunday morning, March 6th so you can plan to go down to El Centro the night before. Units: 12 or 9. Auditing not permitted. Prerequisites: undergraduate or graduate geophysics, Ge111 (Field Geophysics) or equivalent (i.e. the SAGE program). A previous course in seismology is desirable but not required. Note that this course is not a substitute for Ge111a or Ge111b, so if your program requires you to take Ge111a or Ge111b, you still have to take them even if you are enrolled in this class. Course Grading
Letter Grades, based on field performance, and three homework assignments. Regular Class Time
Tues, 9 to 10 a.m., in Room 162 South Mudd.
