Class Schedule, Ge136c section2, spring 2013

Reading group topics:

March 5: Dibblee paper and general logistics orientation

March 19: read Glazner et al., 2002 and Dokka's paper from the "Off limits" field guidebook before we meet. We wlll compare and contrast these two different interpretations of the early Miocene tectonics, during our discussion.

Weekly meeting time is Wed, 9-10 a.m. in 215 North Mudd.

April 3 - General discussion of geologic maps of the western Mojave Desert and topics to focus on for the field trip.

April 10

April 17 probably no meeting

One or two more dates in May still to be determined.

Class topics for the field trip:

1. Nature of the basal Tertiary unconformity

2. Deposits that overlie the unconformity (Tropico Group, others?)

3. Lacustrine limestones in the Miocene basin deposits

4. The Central Mojave Metamorphic Core Complex

5. Mylonites and fault gouge materials

Field trip:

Field trip is April 5-7, 2013.

We will pack the trucks on Friday morning, April 5.

We will leave campus at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and return to campus on Sunday night, April 7. We will be camping out (see logistics page for more info)
