Instructors: Joann Stock, Rob Clayton, Michael Gurnis.
This course is being offered now, Fall 2002. The class involves 25 days of field work aboard a research ship, the Nathaniel B. Palmer, on a transit from Port Hueneme, California, to Lyttelton, New Zealand. The students will do gravity, magnetics, and swath bathymetry, and also do general watchstanding, during the course of the cruise. We will also do marine seismic reflection profiling for a short time during the cruise. Lectures on these techniques and instruction on data collection and initial data processing will be given in a daily one-hour lecture during the cruise.
The textbook recommended for the class is "Marine Geophysics" by E J W Jones, published by Wiley Interscience. This is available in the Caltech bookstore in the class textbook section.
Each student is expected to read background material prior to and during the cruise. Each student should pick a particular topic (from the topic and reading list) and prepare a 30 minute talk on this topic to bring with them on the cruise. They will be asked to give this talk to their fellow students during the cruise. In addition, they should bring 2 sets of photocopies of the major papers on this topic. One set of photocopies will be put into a binder of references for the group to use during the course of the cruise.
Each student is also expected to write up a short report on some aspect of the data collected during the cruise. The assignments of data to students will be done on board as the data are collected. These reports will be due at the time the ship docks in port in Christchurch.
The cruise dates are currently expected to be November 10 - December 5, 2002. This means we will leave campus on the morning of November 9 (we have to be on board the day before the ship sails). These dates are subject to possible minor modification closer to the start of the cruise. Each student is responsible for several homework assignments during the class, and for writing a final report on some aspect of the cruise data.Recommended previous classes in preparation for this class include: undergraduate or graduate geophysics, Ge111 (Field Geophysics) or equivalent (i.e. the SAGE program), and Ge161 (Plate Tectonics). Permission of the instructors (Stock, Clayton, and Gurnis) is required for participation.
Additional information regarding logistics at sea, what to bring, etc. can be found at the logistics page web site.
Our next scheduled class meetings are Tues., Oct. 22, and Tues., Oct. 29th, from 1-2 p.m. in room 215 North Mudd.
