Ge 161: Plate Tectonics, Fall 2011 class

Last updated 9/27/2011 by Joann Stock

Course Description - Fall 2011

The objective of the course is to learn about modern concepts of plate tectonics and how to apply them quantitatively to study a problem. In the process of doing this we will learn to use GMT software to make maps, and we will learn to use the Linux operating system. We will use some web sites to search existing data bases or use existing publicly available software for obtaining parameters such as earthquake focal mechanisms and magnetic field vectors. Each student will write a final paper which will serve as practice for later on writing a research paper (such as for the graduate student oral examination).
