All Alaska Muskoxen disappeared by the 1860s. Fearing total loss of the animal, scientists brought 34
muskoxen from Greenland in the 1930s, releasing them on Nunivak Island. In 1964, on donated land, the
Large Animal Research Station was populated with 34 muskoxen for study and preservation of the species.
These are crazy animals who can bend metal sheets when ramming into them, and reportedly do not
become more tame with increasing generations spent around humans, in captivity.

Caribou also live at the station. In summer, their antlers (made of bone) grow and inch a day!
They remain spongey for a while. Males fight each other with their antlers, and sometimes
become so entangled they can't free themselves, and they die of starvation. In the winter,
male caribou drop their antlers, but the females retain them to protect their young.
