Alaska Photos

Home

Most of these Alaska photos are taken by my brother Ken,
who has terrific set of photos on Arctic Circle Photography.

One of Ken's photos from a trip in northern Alaska was published on the cover of BioScience (Jan 2005).
The photo shows an ornate snowdrift pattern downwind from a lone shrub on the North Slope of Alaska.

This is the tidal bore coming in Turnagain Arm in southern Alaska.
The tides here are among the largest in the world.
Note the lone surfer and flock of birds following the bore.

Here's another tidal bore from Turnagain Arm.
We chased this one for several miles along the road.

solstice
This is the view from our house in Fairbanks on the shortest day of the year,
with the sun creeping over the Alaska Range for about three hours.
This photo was taken by Ken, who opened the shutter every 40 minutes or so.

Here's a nice halo display from northern Alaska with some intriguing foreground (two snow machines).
The sunblocker is one of Ken's buddies on their snow expedition (=science) from Nome to Barrow, Alaska.

Some winter recreation in Denali National Park.  Who is happier? The dogs, the musher (Brent), or the skier (Ken)?

This is more of Brent and his dog team in action.
The leader of the team, shown at right, is pulling hard!

castner
Heading up Castner Glacier (Alaska Range), arguably the Tape family's favorite trip.
Of course, the view on this particular day is rather limited.
