From March to December 2010, he served as member of NSF panel charged to (i) assess the impact of the U.S National Nanotechnology Initiative from 2000-2010 and (ii) suggest research directions for the next 10 years. Their report "*Nanotechnology Research Directions for Societal Needs in 2020"* was published in December 2010 by Springer. As lead author of the sustainability chapter (Chapter 5) of this report, he will give an overview of their findings and recommendations.
