Do bacteria make minerals? Yes! The question is, which? In this photo, a piece of orpiment (As2S3) mined in Nevada is juxtaposed with a culture of bacteria that have precipitated amorphous As2S3. Researchers in the molecular geobiology program at Caltech are interested in whether some of the orpiment deposits in hot spring environments may be biogenic.
