Bacteria are now known to precipitate As2S3 given the appropriate conditions (see Newman et al., 1997 Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 63:2022-2028). Applying what we know of As2S3 formation, we can use it as a marker to design genetic screens to elucidate how a toxic metalloid such as arsenate can serve as a terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration.
