How to import grids generated with ARC/INFO into ArcView

Grids can be exported from ARC/INFO and subsequently copied to other computers and added as themes to ArcView (except on the Macintosh computer). Typically the exported grids are contained within one file with a file suffix ".e00".

The following steps can be used to import the grid.

  1. Copy the export file ("<grid-name>.e00") to the directory where you want to store the grid.

  2. Run the IMPORT 71 application. On the PC, this is located under C:\esri\av_gis30\arcview\bin32\.

  3. In the IMPORT 71 Utililty window that pops up, enter the path and name of the grid export file in the Export Filename box.

  4. In the Output Data Source box enter the path where you want to store the grid followed by the name you want to call the grid (this name can be the same as the export file without the ".e00" suffix). Press OK.

Note: Be certain that the directory wherein you are loading the grid (or any ArcView files for that matter) and all the parent directories do not contain any upper-case letters. We've had problems with ArcView loading grids within mixed-case-named directories.

  5. Once the grid file is imported, start up ArcView and activate the Spatial Analyst. Open a View and select the File - Set Working Directory menu item. Type in the full path to the directory that contains your grid file and press OK.

  6. With the View window still active select the View - Add Theme menu item. For Data Source Type select Grid Data Source. Then navigate to the directory containing your grid file and select the grid. Press OK to load the grid.
Be certain, when working with grids to use ArcView's "Grid Manager" (from the View window select the File - Manage Grids menu item) to copy, rename, or delete any grid that you have establised within ArcView. Failure to do so can cause an Error in Reading STA Table to occur .
