The Instrument Shop

The Instrument Shop is an six-man machine shop staffed to help design and fabricate mechanical, optical and infrared instrumentation. With the ability to work from your pencil drawing, CAD, direct DXF, DWG drawing formats on disk, or internet transfer, we will provide CNC machining using SurfCam software for both mill and lathe work. We also provide plunge EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining), grinding, sheet metal (limited by size), light welding/brazing and mechanical assembly services.

Whether or not our shop facilities are used, members of our staff are available to assist you. We have an adequate library of reference materials, charts, and catalogs, and we offer consultation, recommendations and problem solving. Our staff members, with their various backgrounds and an average of 13 years of experience, are capable of transforming a rough concept into a functioning reality.

The Instrument Shop will also provide a shop course on operating machinery and shop safety. This will assist you in fabricating your own projects.

The shop is located in rooms 027, 029, and 030 in the sub-basement of the Lauritsen building; our phone numbers are 395-6641 and 395-6631, and our fax is 626-229-9895.
