Postdoctoral Position in Statistical Real-time Seismology at Caltech

The Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS) at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for a post-doctoral position in the Seismological Laboratory.  Applicants with interests in Bayesian inference, and earthquake early warning (EEW) are encouraged to apply.  In particular, we seek a candidate who has strong background in applying Bayesian, probability-based framework to a variety of scientific or engineering problems.

One of the major research goals in earthquake early warning is to combine the outputs from many EEW algorithms to generate rapid and accurate alerts.  The position will involve research in: 1) How to use Bayesian decision science to construct a rigorous probability-based alert system; 2) How to modify the current ShakeAlert system to make it faster and more reliable; and 3) Developing Bayesian statistical approaches for large earthquakes or finite rupture source characterizations.  Approaches that take advantage of next generation computational frameworks are encouraged.

A recent Ph.D. in applied statistics, geophysics, earthquake engineering, or a related discipline is required. Experience in applying Bayesian, probability-based frameworks to scientific or engineering problems is required.  Some programming skills in languages, such as C, C++, Java, Python, Matlab, or scripting languages, are highly desired.

The position is available as of November 1, 2015. Funding is available for one year with a possible renewal for two more years, depending on performance and availability of funding.  Applications will be considered until the position is filled.  For additional information, please contact Dr. Egill Hauksson, hauksson@caltech.edu, or Prof. Tom Heaton, heaton@caltech.edu

Applicants should send a CV, a brief statement of research interests and experience, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent electronically to Marcia Hudson at: marcia@gps.caltech.edu

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Postdoctoral Positions

The Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences has the following openings for Postdoctoral Positions:

Seismological Laboratory Director’s Postdoctoral Scholar

The Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for the Seismological Laboratory Director's Postdoctoral Scholar position.  We invite applications for a post doctoral position in any research area covered by the Seismological Laboratory, including, but not limited to: Observational seismology, earth structure, earthquake physics, earthquake early warning, computational geophysics, mineral physics, geodesy, geodynamics, and tectonics. We are especially interested in individuals whose research naturally links with any of the research programs within the Seismo Lab, GPS Division, or other parts of Caltech. A Ph.D. is required and initial appointment will be for one year. Starting date is flexible. Applicants should send a CV, a brief statement of research interests and experience, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent electronically to Marcia Hudson at: marcia@gps.caltech.edu

All applications and references are due by Friday, January 29, 2016.

Fellowship candidates will automatically be considered for other available postdoctoral positions at Caltech in geophysics.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
