Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunities

Financial support for graduate students comes in the form of fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or some combination of fellowship and assistantship support.


NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) -

  • Citizenship:  Foreign students who are enrolled full time at accredited U.S. institutions may apply to the NESSF. However, U.S. Citizens and permanent residents will be given preference when two or more proposals are of equal scientific merit.
  • Due Date:  February 3, 2014

This call for graduate fellowship proposals, entitled NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) Program – 2013/2014 Academic Year, solicits applications from accredited U.S. Universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Masters or Doctoral(Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences,or related disciplines, at respective institutions.The purpose of NESSF is to ensure continued training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines needed to achieve NASA's scientific goals outlined above. Awards resulting from the competitive selection will be made in the form of training grants to the respective universities with the advisor serving as the principal investigator. For the 2013/2014 academic year, NASA expects to award approximately 50 new graduate fellowships in Earth Science, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, and Astrophysics.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program

  • Citizenship:  Applicants must be United States citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States by the application deadline.
  • Due Date:  November 18, 2013

Provides living stipend plus fees/tuition for students in engineering or the natural or social sciences.

The Coordinating Official (CO) for the Caltech NSF GRFP program is Joe Shepherd, who can be contacted through the Graduate Office.  Please see the NSF GFRP Administrative Guide or the NSF Frequently Asked Questions resource before contacting the CO, many of your questions can be answered by reading the guide.   Fellows are responsible for administering their own fellowship status, submitting reports, etc. through the NSF Fastlane Website.  Fellows should include the following acknowledgement on all publications derived from work done while they were fellowship recipients: "This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship under Grant No. DGE‐1144469." 

National Research Council (NRC) Research Associateship Program

  • Citizenship:  Research opportunities at NETL/MHFP are open to U.S. citizens.
  • Due Date:  four annual review cycles - February 1, May 1, June 1, November 1

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.  These awards include generous stipends ranging from $45,000 - $80,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience. Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000.  These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.

National Defense Science & Engineering Fellowship Program (NDSEG)

  • Citizenship:  The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States.
  • Due Date:  December 20, 2013

Three-year awards for students in science and engineering disciplines with military importance.


Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

  • Citizenship:  DOE CSGF is open to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.
  • Due Date:  Early January, 2014


The Hertz Foundation

  • Citizenship:  citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.
  • Due Date:  Fall 2014

Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.



Post Doctoral Fellowship Opportunities

UCAR Jack Eddy Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • Citizenship:  U.S. citizenship is not required to participate in this program, but the selected postdoctoral fellows must be hosted at a U.S. research institution.
  • Due Date:  January 17, 2014

The Jack Eddy Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to train the next generation of researchers needed in the emerging field of Heliophysics (all science common to the field of the Sun-Earth connections).

University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program -

  • Citizenship:  All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application.
  • Due Date:  November 1

The University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California.


The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) -

  • Citizenship:  U.S. Citizens and permanent residents will be given preference
  • Due Date:  March 1, July 1, and November 1

The NASA Postdoctoral Program supports NASA's goal to expand scientific understanding of the Earth and the universe in which we live.

W. M. Keck Institute for Space Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship -

  • Citizenship:  Open to all
  • Due Date:  December 2, 2013

The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) announces the solicitation of KISS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program applications for fellowships to begin in 2014.

USGS Mendenhall Research Fellowship Program -

  • Citizenship:  As the Mendenhall Fellowships are U.S. Government positions, the USGS must give preference to U.S. citizens. Citizens of other nations may be considered under certain circumstances.
