Some Generally Useful Lab InformationGe151: Spring 2011
Doing the Labs:You'll probably need to do at least some computer work outside of the scheduled block for each lab. In some cases, we've written instructional programs to help you learn the concepts, and in others using the programs to make useful products is a major point of the exercise. If you have a Unix/Linux box or Mac, or some other system which is running the programs we use (Matlab, ISIS, Photoshop) you can do the work there. Otherwise, I can help you install software on a windows laptop to access the GPS network. If you do, at any time, ssh in to the ge151 directory, you can use the following machines: meridiani, gale, gusev, solis The directory is: /home/ge151/ You can do all computer components of the labs on the Sun/Solaris machines (Matlab, ISIS, Photoshop) but the Windows machines only have Photoshop. Geologic Maps:Some labs will ask you to use or reference geologic maps of Mars. These are in manila folders in blue plastic caddys on the shelves in 056 South Mudd (same as the computer lab). The electronic directory is an Excel file on Agassiz (the furthest windows machine from the lab door). A paper directory is in folder # 2178. Global maps of Mars may be found in folders # 940, 961, 2179, and 2461. Do not remove the maps from 056 S. Mudd. Of course, an easier resource for place names on Mars is Google Mars GPS homepage - Home - General Info - Schedule - Assignments - Labs - Field Trip - Reading - Projects - References - Feedback |
