Ge 111b 2009 Food Group Sign-Up

Please sign up for a food group (in class organizational meeting, Thursday March 12, 9 am., 162 S. Mudd) for the 7 days in the field March 22 to March 28. Each group is responsible for purchasing their food before we leave for the field.

It is up to each group as to how you want to share your food responsibilities. One suggestion is:  within each group, each individual is responsible for their own breakfast and lunch; dinners are prepared as a group.

In choosing your food, please note:

  • There will be hot water at breakfast, but it's probably best to keep breakfast simple so you can get out of camp on time.
  • You usually will be in the field at lunch, so if it's important that your lunch stay 'cool', bring a small personal cooler with you.
  • Each group will have a large cooler with block ice to keep the food cool back at camp. Your food group can buy more block ice on Wednesday afternoon when we go shopping.
  • Try to consolidate your non-perishable group food items into a single box that can easily be stored on a table or in a locked vehicle back at camp during the day (to keep it safe from critters and dirt).  Note: some plastic bins will be available for use.  Cardboard boxes are not adequate protection against critters, so anything in cardboard boxes will need to be left in a vehicle. Note that it will get hot in the vehicles so stuff like chocolate should be kept in your cooler.
  • There will be one trip to the market in the middle of the week (afternoon of the Wednesday), to buy more food.
  • For cooking, you can plan on having one or two burners available for your group to heat things up on.  Do not plan a meal that requires the use of more than 2 burners to cook things.
  • The drinking water at camp is fine, so you do not need to buy water.
  • Plan to have food for the following meals at a MINIMUM: 6 lunches (Sun-Fri), 6 dinners (Sun-Fri), 6 breakfasts (Mon-Sat).  On Sunday the 22nd, bring your lunch packed so that you can eat it in camp when we arrive. Note that you can shop on Wed. so you don't have to buy all the fresh supplies for all of these days; you can buy for the first half of the week and then buy freshies again on Wed. afternoon for the last 3 days of the trip.

Caltech will provide cooking pots, plates, cups, bowls, utensils, stove, bucket for cleaning, sponge, dish soap. These will be stored in a large metal box that everybody will share. Note: Coffee pots/filter cones etc. are not included as part of group supplies. The drinking cups are 8 oz size and do not have lids, so you may want to bring your own coffee/tea cup, particularly if you like having a larger cup or a lid on your cup.

This will be a dry trip; consumption of alcohol is not allowed.
