Grad Student Ryan Petterson is standing on reddish brown strata (Elatina Formation) in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. The glacial strata were deposited during one of the coldest periods in earth history, the Marinoan glaciation, when most or all of the Earth was frozen at the surface. It abruptly ended 635 million years ago with severe global warming, represented by the yellowish-brown carbonate strata under Ryan's left hand (Nuccaleena Formation).
