Sky Rashby Memorial Fund

The purpose of this fund is to allow the continued scientific outreach and community involvement valued and demonstrated by our friend, Sky Rashby. Sky was a truly unique individual who was committed to learning about global issues and contributing to their resolution. His interests ranged from technical to philosophical issues, including promoting alternative energy use and facilitating discussions on the ethical responsibilities of scientists. This fund exists to continue to spread Sky’s society-concerned, action-oriented attitude, which he taught many of us to adopt.

Funds are available to any student or postdoc in the Caltech community who demonstrates genuine interest in the issue to be addressed, and presents a specific plan of action for the requested money. Decisions on project funding will be made by a committee including at least three (3) people from the current Caltech Geobiology community (faculty, students and/or postdocs).

Proposals will be considered throughout the year depending upon the funds available. The initial date for project submission has yet to be determined.

Suggested issues of interest:
(1) Alternate Energy Development
(2) Scientific Education of the Public
(3) Conservation
(4) Scientific Ethics
(5) Shaping policy and outreach

We wish to give people the opportunity to develop new ways to support these causes. Some activities that will be supported include:
(1) Relevant conference attendance and presentations
(2) Community outreach and education
(a) Elementary or High School visits
(b) Online resources
(c) One-time displays at day events or meetings
(3) Support for involvement in environmental public works
