Ge 263 HWK 3: Finite-Difference Tsunami Example with a Rupture Source

February 3, 2005

Given problem
Modify your code from HWK 2 to implement a rupture source that starts from lon = 95.66E, lat = 2.61N and ends at lon = 93.07E, lat = 5.70N with a rupture speed of 2 km/s. Compare snapshots of the wave-field in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea to compare the timing of the tsunami in Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.

Table: Locations and tsunami arrival times for finite source
Location lat (deg) lon (deg) arrival time (min)
Chennei(India) $ 13.0$ $ 80.5$ $ 160$
Phuket(Thailand) $ 7.5$ $ 98.0$ $ 90$
east-coast Sri Lanka $ 7.0$ $ 82.0$ $ 115$

Table: Locations and tsunami arrival times for a point source
Location lat (deg) lon (deg) arrival time (min)
Chennei(India) $ 13.0$ $ 80.5$ $ 200$
Phuket(Thailand) $ 7.5$ $ 98.0$ $ 125$
east-coast Sri Lanka $ 7.0$ $ 82.0$ $ 150$
